The Life of the World

1 John 5:19
“We know that we are of God, but the whole world lies in wickedness.”

“The tragedy of the Twentieth Century especially has been that the Church in her folly has been trying to accommodate herself to the world, thinking that, by doing so, she could attract it. But the world expects the Christian to be different. What the Bible means by ‘world’ is life as it is organized without God. It is inclusive of all life that excludes God – at its very best and highest, and its very worst and lowest. The trouble with the world is not that it lacks certain qualities. It is not simply that it ought to be better than it is. Rather, the life of this world is controlled entirely and absolutely by an evil power.”
