1 John 5:6 - 8
“This is He that came by water and blood, Jesus Christ. Not by water only, but by water and blood. It is the Spirit that bears witness because the Spirit is truth. There are three that bear record in Heaven: the Father, the Word, and the Holy Spirit. These three are one. And there are three that bear witness on earth: the spirit, the water, and the blood. And these three agree in one.”
“John is here concerned to establish the reality of the incarnation. He was anxious to do so in order to correct a heresy that was prevalent at that time. It taught that Jesus was a man and when He was baptized in the Jordan, the eternal Christ came upon Him, so that from the moment of the baptism, the eternal Christ was dwelling in the human Jesus. He continued to do so until just before the crucifixion. Then the eternal Christ went back to Heaven, and it was only the man Jesus who was crucified.
That puts a wedge between the man Jesus and the eternal Christ. And in these verses John is concerned to assert the mighty fact: that the baby in the manger is the God-man, Jesus Christ, and not Jesus only. The incarnation is a reality. John refers to the testimony and witness of the water and the blood in order to establish the unity and oneness of the Person, Jesus Christ.”
