Understanding

1 John 5:20
“We know that the Son of God has come and has given us an understanding, that we may know Him that is true. We are in Him that is true, even in His son Jesus Christ. This is the true God and eternal life.”

“The reference to ‘understanding’ in this text is nothing but a very direct piece of teaching with regard to the Holy Spirit. What John says is that the Son of God has done something to our minds. He has enabled us to understand these things. Running through the Old Testament, there is a promise of this. The Law was given to men and women. They were told to read that law and try to put it into practice. The prophecy was that a day would come when God would make a new covenant with men and women. He would write His law in their minds and place it in their hearts. They would no longer look at the Law and painfully try to keep it and fail. They would then want to keep it. The would love to keep it. It would be something working within them. That was the great promise (Acts 1:4).”
