1 John 2:20, 21, & 27
"But you have an unction from the Holy One, and you know all things. I have not written unto you because you know not the truth, but because you do know it, and that no lie is of the truth. … The anointing which you have received of Him abides in you and you need not any man teach you. As the same anointing teaches you all things and is truth, is no lie; and even as it has taught you, you shall abide in Him."
“The greatest blessing the Christian Gospel has to offer, greater than forgiveness, greater than peace, joy, and all the sensations which we know from time to time, is this wonderful fact of fellowship with God the Father and God the Son through the Holy Spirit.
The Apostle is not dealing with the question of guidance. These verses have nothing at all to do with that. They are not concerned to teach me this whole difficult subject of knowing what God wants me to do with regard to particular decisions. John is discussing here a knowledge of truth, a knowledge of doctrine. This concern is the truth of the doctrine that Jesus is the Christ. That is the context so we must exclude everything else.
Christians have the Holy Spirit and can understand this truth. That is why the Christian Faith is not a faith only for philosophers. It is a faith for everybody. It is not something that depends on man's natural ability. It is an enlightenment, an 'unction.' The Holy Spirit enables men and women to see and understand something of the glorious nature of salvation. Though they may be simple, though they may be ignorant, though the world may dub them as unintelligent, if they have the Spirit, this enlightenment, they understand things that the greatest philosopher cannot understand.”
